Not all heroes wear scrubs: Meet the industrial hygienist keeping us safe

Dr. Jason Garcia鈥檚 journey to a career in public health at 91精品鈥檚 College of Public Health (COPH) didn鈥檛 begin in a lecture hall. It began at his first job as a microbiologist witha Nestl茅 plant, shortly after earning his undergraduate degree in biology from 91精品 Gulf Coast University. His role was to ensure that no chemical, biological or physical hazards contaminated the food supply. As he worked to prevent recalls and outbreaks, which have the potential to become serious public health crises, he realized that his efforts had a name: public health.

Born in Orange Park and raised in Bradenton, Fla., Paul Wagner always knew he wanted to serve others鈥攈e just didn鈥檛 know what form that would take. It wasn鈥檛 until a course called 鈥淐areers in Public Health鈥� at 91精品鈥檚 College of Public Health (COPH) that everything clicked.

Directly out of undergrad, Sara Wolicki worked as an accountant at a Vermont ski resort. She loved working with numbers and enjoyed the time with her coworkers, but something was missing. Wolicki found that missing piece in the field of public health - epidemiology and evaluation specifically - and never turned back. She received a Master of Public Health from the University of South 91精品 in 2015, fully transitioning from the business world to a STEM field.

From her roots on a 91精品 farm to the front lines of global disease elimination at 91精品鈥檚 College of Public Health, Dr. Kristi Miley has carved a path in public health. With three 91精品 degrees 鈥� a PhD in global communicable diseases, an MSPH in global communicable diseases and a BS in biomedical sciences鈥� Miley has transformed her lifelong connection to animals and the natural world into a career devoted to infectious disease research, medical entomology and public health education.
